EC3 Global expert to address sustainability conference

One of the world's foremost experts on sustainable development, Michael Duggan from EC3 Global, will be presenting at the International Sustainable Development Research Conference in the United Kingdom next week.  His address will examine the future-role of decentralised global organisations in creating and implementing sustainability education programs.

As part of his speaking tour, Michael will be presenting at the Design Hotels Arena 2012 conference in Germany where he will discuss the travelling public's demand for not only environmentally sustainable tourism, but for tourism businesses to act more responsibly and ethically towards the local community in which they are based.

In his role as General Manager of Sustainability at EC3 Global, this is a topic that Michael addresses every day with the company's 1300 EarthCheck members in more than 70 countries.

"As we near the end of the United Nation's Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in 2014, it is important to reflect upon what has been achieved during the period and how facilitation of education for sustainable development (EfSD) can contribute to an improved future," said Mr Duggan.

He said decentralised global networks face a number of challenges in EfSD that effect the way in which they deliver sustainability learning.

Large tourism and hotel chains are essentially decentralised businesses by the very nature of their many linked, yet independently run properties.

"Decentralised global networks report a high level of governance and accountability and a need for their programs to be relevant to stakeholders in an evolving age of education and communication.

"Funding and economic resilience, strength of networks and levels of collaboration combined the organisation's relationship with the community are also key factors," he said.

Michael says the way in which these barriers are overcome and new opportunities are embraced will impact upon anyone engaging in sustainability learning, including businesses, schools, not-for-profit organisations, government and community groups.

In his presentation, Michael presents research which leads to a theoretical framework that enables organisations to set clear organisational, or project specific, directions and methodologies.   Ultimately, the framework will be used by decentralised organisations to increase their success rates, scalability, and delivery of sustainability projects.
