Australian Developed Innovation Accommodates UN Climate Summit in Bali
As Prime Minister Kevin Rudd enters the Nusa Dua destination in Bali for an historic
meeting at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNCCC), he walks in to a tourism destination
at the forefront of world leading climate change adaptation and mitigation policies
engineered in Australia by Green Globe.
It may be the first time the Australian government has proactively joined the international
community to address climate change, but the region playing host to the UNCCC, Nusa
Dua, has been actively involved in addressing sustainability for years.
In an effort to reduce the impact of the region’s tourism operations, as a community,
the Bali Tourism Development Corporation joined the Australian sustainability programme
Green Globe in 2002.
“Bali has long been a worldwide leader among tourist destinations through its efforts
to ensure it is operating sustainably,” explains Stewart Moore, CEO of EC3 Global,
management company of Green Globe.
Five years ago, the Balinese corporation identified concerns regarding the affect
climate change would have on the Nusa Dua destination, one of which was a potential
threat posed by rising sea levels to low-lying coastal areas. The ramifications
of not addressing this and other forecasts result in Bali’s ability to continue
to operate sustainably as a tourist destination.
“As part of the Green Globe programme, the Nusa Dua region has had to measure and
reduce the environmental impacts of new tourism developments and greenhouse gas
emissions, as well as several other related environmental performance areas.
Not only has the Bali Tourism Development Corporation exceeded the environmental
benchmarks set by Green Globe’s rigorous programme, they have also championed the
positive role tourism communities play in mitigating the affects of climate change.
“It is time the international community recognised and rewarded the community’s
foresight by reaching a lasting consensus for climate change mitigation strategies,
helping to ensure the long-term viability of tourism-reliant economies like Bali’s.”
Green Globe is the only international benchmarking, certification and performance
improvement programme in the world. The science and technology developed for the
Green Globe programme was pioneered by the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research
Centre (STCRC). Sustainable Tourism provides the largest source of sustainable tourism
research in the world.
FAST FACTS
- The United Nations Climate Change Conference is being held in Nusa Dua, a Green Globe accredited community. While this Government should be commended for being the first Australian Government to be involved in climate change adaptation and mitigation policies, Australia’s Green Globe has been involved in this issue and in the Indonesian region since the year 2000;
- Green Globe is based on the Agenda 21 principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio De Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992 and is managed by EC3 Global;
- Green Globe has been leading the world in tourism sustainability issues since 1996;
- Green Globe’s headquarters, based in Australia, is the administrative centre for sustainability certification globally;
- Through the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC), Green Globe has been involved in assisting communities and organisations address the effects of climate change since 1996;
- Developed from the United Nations Rio Earth Summit of 1992, Green Globe is the globally-recognised benchmarking and certification programme assisting communities and organisations reduce their environmental impact;
- The programme is supported by science developed by the STCRC, an Australian initiative begun in 1996. The STCRC is the largest source of sustainable research in the world;
- Green Globe’s Community programme facilitates responsible and sustainable environmental outcomes. It provides communities with a framework to benchmark and certify their environmental and social performance, and then continuously improve their performance over time;
- The Green Globe programme empowers Nusa Dua’s local population to be involved in the decision making process, as well as encourage them to build on local initiatives. The Community programme ensures that the Community is practically addressing the key environmental issues facing the planet, including conservation, environmental regeneration and non-renewable resource management.
